General Policy on Safe Scuba Diving Practices

Diving authorization is required for all University persons involved in underwater education or research activities.

All divers must complete a Divers Medical Examination annually.

Use of breathing apparatus other than open-circuit scuba shall require special review and approval.

An appropriate alternate air source or secondary second-stage regulator (octopus) shall be part of each divers scuba.

Use of breathing gases other than compressed air shall require special review and approval.

Scuba dives are to be restricted to depths of 100 feet (30.5 meters) or less unless requirements for deeper depths are justifiable. Diving to greater depths shall require special review and approval.

Scuba dives shall be planned to remain within no-decompression time limits. Dives requiring mandatory decompression shall require special review and approval.

Scuba regulators and scuba cylinders are to be inspected by a qualified technician annually. Scuba cylinders are to hydrostatically tested at no greater than 5 year intervals.

All scuba divers shall observe appropriate buddy diving practices. Solo diving is prohibited. Tethered scuba diving (single-diver deployment) shall require special review and approval.

Aircraft flight is restricted for no-less than 12 hours following completion of a no-decompression dive. Longer intervals are desirable. This restriction shall be extended to at least 24-hours following dives with mandatory decompression, emergency decompression, or omitted decompression.
