Supervisors of University research employees are required to provide specific training on the occupational risks associated with their research materials and methods. RH&S provides base-line safety training in all areas of research risk, increasing awareness, and reducing the regulatory burden on research operations.
Template manuals, hazard guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures are provided that are easy for researchers to understand and to customize to meet their needs. Examples include the Chemical Hygiene Plan and Hazard Communication Plan.
Research Facility Planning & Design
RH&S assists facilities and renovation engineers in planning high-quality laboratory space to support successful research projects. Application of local exhaust ventilation equipment, specialty containment equipment, emergency eyewash stations, chemical storage features, and other design features are considered to reduce workplace risks.
Safety Coordinators, appointed by their Director or Department Chair, assist RH&S by receiving and distributing safety-related materials from OSEH, and by functioning as a safety information resource to their constituents. Information on this important program is available in an OSEH Guideline.
The EHSA chemical inventory system is a web-based, online, limited access database that is used to maintain inventories of chemicals in UM research laboratories. This system is maintained on a secure internet server and is an easy to use, long-term, convenient way for researchers to maintain their inventories, generate various built-in inventory reports and export data to Excel.
Safety Data Sheets
The ChemWatch ChemGold III (CG3) SDS repository program contains over 13 million vendor SDS for chemicals and chemical mixtures in multiple languages as well as "mini-SDS" in 30 languages. The CG3 program can also be used to print safety labels, view molecular structures and obtain environmental & other regulatory information.
