Ballasts are collected by Hazardous Materials Management (HMM). Contact HMM at 763-4568 for delivery of storage containers (5-gallon buckets and 55-gallon steel drums), labels and pick-ups.
Place any leaking ballasts in a sealed bag and place on top of non-leaking ballasts, or place in a separate container.
All types of ballasts are collected. Remove ballast from lighting fixture and dispose of light bulbs separately.
How are ballasts recycled?
Ballasts are disassembled at a certified hazardous waste facility. Steel, copper and other metals are removed, sent to a smelter and recycled for industrial use. Capacitors, tar and PCB components are containerized for EPA approved incineration. Leaking ballasts are also segregated for incineration.
