Radioactive Materials / X-Rays in Animals
Disposal
OSEH/RSS has established guidelines for the appropriate disposal of animal carcass/pathological waste. Cage/pen wastes (i.e., animal excreta and bedding) must be collected in strong, yellow leak-proof plastic bags provided by OSEH/RSS, and sealed with "Caution Radioactive Material" labeling tape. Bags must be labeled with the Authorized User/Investigator's name, radionuclide(s), total collected activity, and date. Leave these bags in a designated radioactive animal freezer for your area/building. OSEH/RSS will collect and dispose of all forms of radioactive waste.
Carcasses and tissues removed from animals must be frozen and stored in designated radioactive freezers until they can be disposed of by OSEH/RSS as solid radioactive waste. Carcasses must be placed into a strong, leak-proof plastic bag provided by OSEH/RSS, and sealed tightly with "Caution Radioactive Material" labeling tape. The bag must be labeled or tagged with the Authorized User/Investigator's name, radionuclide(s), total activity in carcass, and date administered.
OSEH/RSS provides opaque bags, as well as labeling tags for all radioactive animal and pathological waste. OSEH/RSS will provide opaque bags and animal waste tags upon request to all Authorized Users who use radioactive material in animals.
OSEH/RSS also provides a freezer for the storage of radioactive animal/pathological waste awaiting disposal. The freezer designated for radioactive carcasses and pathological wastes is located at A592 MSRB II.
The OSEH/RSS freezer must be locked at all times when left unattended. Authorized Users can also obtain freezer keys through OSEH/RSS.
| NOTE: | Radioactive animal/pathological waste must not be placed in any other freezer than the one listed above, unless approved by OSEH/RSS. Contact OSEH/RSS when the freezer is full or should the freezer not be functioning properly. |
