Household Hazardous Waste Disposal
Proper disposal of household waste is an important part in preventing contamination of surface and ground waters. Common household hazardous wastes, such as oil, oil-based paint, batteries, and antifreeze, should not be disposed with regular household trash that is landfilled. At the landfill, contaminants from household hazardous waste have potential to either seep into groundwater or to be carried off site by storm water runoff. Good waste handling practices, such as recycling, composting, and proper hazardous waste disposal, help protect our water resources and our environment.

The Washtenaw County Regional Drop-Off Station, located at 2950 E. Ellsworth Rd., and the Washtenaw County Home Toxics Center, located at 705 N. Zeeb Rd., are two excellent sites for unloading your recyclable materials, bulk items, construction materials, compost, and toxic or hazardous wastes. Compost and mulch are also available for sale at the Regional Drop-Off Station on Ellsworth and the City of Ann Arbor Materials Recovery Facility Scalehouse, located at 4120 Platt Rd. Be sure to check with both the Regional Drop-Off Station and the Home Toxics Center, they each have a list of acceptable household hazardous materials to get you started.
