Falls from scaffolds continue to be a significant cause of all occupational fatalities involving falls from working surfaces. The main contributing factors for these accidents are lack of training, improper setup, lack of pre-use inspection and improper use. While falls from scaffolds is the primary concern, there are other issues that could lead to injury that must be considered when erecting scaffoldin such as falling objects, electrical hazards, and weather conditions.
Scaffold training is a must for all employees who erect, disassemble, move, operate, repair, maintain, or inspect scaffolding. Training will cover the following:
- The nature of the hazards
- The role of the Competent Person
- Procedures for erecting, disassembling, moving, operating, repairing, maintaining, and inspecting
- Safe Scaffold Use
- Pre- Shift Inspection
- Fall Protection
Refer to OSEH’s Scaffold, Ladder and Fall Protection Guideline for assistance in implementing fall protection for your Department.
